Where can I find the perfect church?

The perfect church does not exist. Some Christians go through their whole lives moving from church to church, getting excited for a while in a new fellowship but always finding fault with something, and moving on.

The simple fact is that none of us are perfect. We are all human, and all have shortcomings. None of us have cornered the market on truth, or virtue, or piety, or righteousness. We all make mistakes. We all get our priorities mixed up. We all let people down sometimes. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that we can learn from our mistakes. We can grow and mature by working out our conflicts. Through God’s grace we can find forgiveness when we sin. Caring church members can reach out with loving hands to pick us up when we fall down. If we are open and honest with each other, God’s love can transform us. It won’t make us perfect people but will make us better people.

So, if you are looking for a perfect church—God bless you, and good luck! Send me a postcard when you find it! We are certainly not a perfect church.

I will never be a perfect pastor. We hope, by God’s grace, to be a loving church, with a passion to understand and live out our imperfect faith in a hurting world. I believe that’s exactly what God wants us to be.
